On the banks of the Nile, beneath a darkening sky pierced by a single rising star, an emperor breaks.
This neoclassical oil painting-style print depicts the moment Hadrian discovers his beloved Antinous — serene in death, draped in violet, his curls still perfect — and howls his grief toward the heavens. The composition draws directly from the grand tradition of lamentation painting: the raw, open-mouthed anguish of the emperor in imperial crimson at its center, surrounded by a chorus of courtiers registering shock, sorrow, and uneasy silence. Palm trees and the Nile's dark water anchor the scene in Egypt, 130 CE. Above it all, the star that Hadrian would name Antinous blazes into existence.
