Set in Antinoopolis — the city Hadrian built on the very banks where Antinous drowned — this final panel of The Passion of Antinous triptych depicts the moment of transformation. Crowned in laurel, draped in white, his left hand already becoming the cool perfection of marble, Antinous strides forward carrying the ivy-wound thyrsus of Dionysus — the god of resurrection, of beautiful things that die and return. Water lilies from the Nile scatter at his feet. On either side, the citizens of his city bow as he passes. Above him, barely visible in the amber dusk, his star ignites for the first time.
The grief of the first panel. The silence of the second. And now this — a young man from Bithynia, pulled from a river, remade as a god, walking through the city that bears his name into the last light of an Egyptian evening. The Nile took him.
