Nineteen centuries ago, a sculptor working somewhere in the Peloponnese cut this face into stone — the tousled curls, the heavy-lidded gaze turned three-quarters away, the mouth set somewhere between calm and grief. The bust surfaced at Patras and now stands in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (inv. 417), one of the most quietly devastating portraits to survive from antiquity. It was made after Antinous drowned in the Nile in 130 AD and Hadrian, undone by the loss, ordered his beloved's likeness raised across the empire — in temples, in gymnasia, on coins, in marble that has outlasted the empire itself.
This portrait asks the obvious, impossible question: what if the marble let go? Working from the Patras bust's exact proportions — the low curling fringe, the level brow, the slight downward tilt that marble sculptors used to read as pensive across a room — we've rebuilt Antinous in skin, breath, and studio light.
