Braschi Antinous - Art Deco

The Braschi Antinous stands in the Vatican Museums, and he has been staring into the middle distance for approximately 1,900 years. He is very good at it.

The gaze is direct. The posture is commanding. He holds a scepter and stands on a plinth and looks, for once, entirely comfortable with being a god.

Here he is rendered in Tyrian purple and gold, the imperial colors, against a sunburst of black and gilt chevrons that could have come straight from a Chrysler Building lobby. The floral crown. The raised scepter. The absolute conviction of a figure who has been worshipped at one of the most sacred sites in the ancient world and has decided to lean into it.
