Ivy-crowned and draped in leopard skin, thyrsus in hand, this is Antinous as Dionysus — god of ecstasy, wine, and the promise of life beyond death. Of all his syncretic identities, this bond ran deepest: Dionysus was the god most closely woven into the mysteries of his cult, invoked in the rites that marked his passage from death into divinity.
